203 people die in monsoon-induced disasters

KATHMANDU, AUGUST 26: The death toll from monsoon-induced disasters in the country since June 10 has reached 203. The Nepal Police confirmed this number of fatalities as of Sunday afternoon.

Three people died in the Kathmandu Valley, 28 in Koshi Province, eight in Madhes Province, and 42 in Bagmati Province, according to DIG and Spokesperson of Nepal Police Dan Bahadur Karki.

Likewise, Gandaki Province recorded 56 fatalities, Lumbini Province 37 fatalities, Karnali Province 13, and Sudurpaschim Province 16, shared DIG Karki.

Karki further informed that 251 people sustained injuries in landslides and floods during this period. Among them, 11 were injured in the Kathmandu Valley alone, while 38 were injured in Koshi Province, 12 in Madhes Province, and 28 in Bagmati Province.

Additionally, 47 injuries were reported from Gandaki Province, 19 from Lumbini Province, 62 from Karnali Province, and 34 from Sudurpaschim Province.

Rescue operations carried out by security agencies saved the lives of 210 vulnerable individuals from various places since the onset of the monsoon this year.

However, 154 people are still missing, and search operations are ongoing, added DIG Karki.

The disasters caused inundation and damaged several infrastructures, including 408 houses, 123 cowsheds, 52 bridges, six schools, and two government office buildings, according to the police.

Meanwhile, 924 livestock were lost to the floods and landslides. The disasters displaced 6,044 households over the past two months, police said.
