NEA posts a gross profit of over Rs 9 billion

No electricity had to be imported from India in three months

KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 18: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) reported a gross profit of Rs 9.11 billion in the first three months of the current fiscal year, before taxes. From Shrawan (mid-July to mid-August) to Ashwin (mid-September to mid-October), the total income reached Rs 41.8 billion, while total expenses amounted to Rs 32.69 billion.

During this period, the NEA spent Rs 32.69 billion on operational and maintenance costs. Additionally, the revenue from electricity sales at various distribution centers totalled Rs 28.95 billion, but the actual collected amount was Rs 26.77 billion.

The NEA purchased a total of 4.10 billion units of electricity—875.2 million units from its own and subsidiary companies, and 3.22 billion units from other private producers. For these purchases, a total payment of Rs 21.09 billion was made, according to NEA Executive Director Kulman Ghising.

No electricity was imported from India between Shrawan and Ashwin. Despite a shortfall in expected exports due to floods in the second week of Ashwin, the NEA did not have to import electricity during this period. In fact, it exported 1.40 billion units of electricity to India, generating Rs 10.88 billion in revenue.

The Nepal government, along with foreign aid and investment, spent Rs 16.93 billion during this period. This amount was used for various projects and electrification efforts. Of this, the NEA itself spent Rs 10.88 billion, while foreign payments accounted for Rs 6.05 billion.
