KATHMANU, MARCH 24: Nepal imported petroleum products worth Rs 122.2 billion through the Birgunj border transit point in the last eight months of the current fiscal year 2024/25, an increase of Rs 1.67 billion compared to the same period last year.
The imports included diesel, petrol, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), aviation turbine fuel (ATF), and kerosene. According to the Birgunj Customs Office, revenue from petroleum imports also saw a rise, reaching Rs 50.13 billion, up from Rs 44.80 billion in the same period last fiscal year.
Chief Customs Administrator Deepak Lamichhane attributed the increased imports to ongoing infrastructure projects. Diesel imports stood at 685,991 kiloliters worth Rs 61.45 billion, generating Rs 27.31 billion in revenue. Petrol imports totalled 290,382 kiloliters worth Rs 25.30 billion, contributing Rs 16.48 billion in revenue.
LPG imports reached 210.42 million kilograms, valued at Rs 24.05 billion, with Rs 4.5 billion collected in revenue. In comparison, the previous fiscal year saw LPG imports of 186.81 million kilograms worth Rs 19.52 billion.
The rising import trend underscores Nepal's increasing fuel demand, particularly driven by construction and development activities.
